Does very dry soil affect mapping?

Does very dry soil affect mapping?

In our earliest days we used a Veris machine to collect EC data. Veris EC data is definitely affected by dry conditions. Electrical conductivity can’t flow from one disk to the other without soil moisture. We have since mapped many, many acres of dry, and frozen, ground using an EM38 without any issues. However, soil moisture consistency is very important with any kind of EC mapping instrument. If we begin mapping a field while it’s dry and then finish after a very large amount of rain the data will change. In those cases we will remap the entire field.

    • Does snow affect mapping?

Snow actually causes more challenge for the mapping trucks than for the SWAT BOX. The EC readings are still reliable through snow, and as long as we can drive through the drifts (rather than over them) the elevation data will still be accurate. We ...

    • How many soil samples do you take from each field?

All maps have 10 zones, but we soil sample so as to make 5 soil sample zones. It can vary upon the size of the field, but a quarter section would typically have 5 geo-referenced points per zone, using 2-3 cores per point, or 10-15 cores per zone to ...
    • What is the SWAT BOX?

SWAT BOX is a developed autonomous mapping system. The system logs soil electrical conductivity (EC) and elevation data if an RTK GPS system is made available. It can be mounted to trucks, all terrain vehicles, and a variety of Ag equipment and only ...
    • What is Electrical Conductivity (EC)?

EC is a measure of soil electrical conductivity, which is largely determined by salinity (soluble salts) and soil texture (clay content). When combined with topography and site-specific soil tests, it is a proven way of delineating management zones ...
